Local stocks closed sharply higher, NIFTY up 2.40%

The key domestic indices ended sharply higher. Nifty Auto, Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Realty shares advanced, while Nifty Media shares fell.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, registered sharp gains of 2008.61 points or 2.60% to 79,310.01. The Nifty 50 index rallied 576 points or 2.40% to 24,536.60. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex surged by 4.67% and 4.78%, respectively.

The broader market failed to keep pace with frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index soared 1.97% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index rose 0.88%.

The market breadth was well-supported. On the BSE, 3666 shares gained and 1683 shares declined. A total of 184 shares were unchanged.

HDFC Bank Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 654.02 lakh shares and saw a sharp spurt of 100.05% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has jumped by around 4.53% in last one-month and has fallen sharply 25.23% over last one year.

ICICI Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 383.24 lakh shares and posted a sharp rise of 234.50% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has surged around 6.91% in last one-month and has soared 6.52% over last one year.

Index action

The Nifty Auto index rallied 4.14% to 27601.75 today. The index has soared by 3.10% in last one week and has risen slightly by 4.26% over last one month. It slipped by 0.40% in last one year. Uno Minda Ltd (up 11.54%), Ashok Leyland Ltd (up 10.50%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (up 5.59%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (up 5.48%) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (up 5.46%) moved up.

The Nifty Financial Services index surged 3.99% to 26600.45 today. The index has rallied by 4.76% in last one week and has edged up 3.75% over last one month. It edged lower by 5.94% in last one year. Bajaj Finance Ltd (up 7.65%), Cholamandalam Investment & Finance Company Ltd (up 6.15%), Shriram Finance Ltd (up 6.08%), SBI Cards & Payment Services Ltd (up 5.79%) and ICICI Bank Ltd (up 5.33%) went up.

The Nifty Media index eased by 0.84% to 1696.2 today. The index has jumped by 4.47% in last one week and has added 9.62% over last one month. It rose by 11.62% in last one year. Prime Focus Ltd (down 5.66%), Tips Music Ltd (down 2.93%), MPS Ltd (down 1.25%), Nazara Technologies Ltd (down 0.82%) and Sun TV Network Ltd (down 0.76%) moved lower.

The Nifty Chemicals index inched down by 0.63% to 27658.55 today. The index has surged by 3.97% in last one week and has eased by 0.55% over last one month. It is down around 4.62% in last one year. P I Industries Ltd (down 19.07%), Solar Industries India Ltd (down 4.50%), Deepak Nitrite Ltd (down 2.18%), Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals Ltd (down 1.50%) and Linde India Ltd (down 1.29%) fell.

The Nifty Auto index rose for a third session in a row today. Uno Minda Ltd (up 11.54%), Ashok Leyland Ltd (up 10.50%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (up 5.59%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (up 5.48%) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (up 5.46%) jumped.

Global Markets

European markets showed a slight improvement.

DOW futures are scarcely higher by 0.66% today.

NIFTY50 futures closed with strong gains of 2.56% at 24585 and are in a premium of 48 points compared to NIFTY50.
